About

The 2nd Annual Missoula Old Time Social is a friendly gathering celebrating traditional music and dance—three days of jamming, square dances, workshops, a concert, and a grand cakewalk. All are encouraged to participate—pick up an instrument, learn to clog, try your hand at square dancing, join in a cakewalk. This event is for everyone, all ages—beginners and experts, alike. The Old Time Social is all about having a good time and, well, it’s a social! We hope you will join in the fun!

Workshop Schedule
Saturday April 14

Workshops will be held at The Downtown Dance Collective and The Loft of Missoula (just upstairs from the DDC). There will be a ‘welcome table’ just inside the door at the Downtown Dance Collective and someone will be there to help you find your workshop location. All workshops are 1 hour unless indicated otherwise. No need to sign up in advance. Questions? Email us at missoulaoldtime@gmail.com.

All workshops are FREE! Everyone is welcome.

12 pm

Fiddle for Cajun and Creole Music- Sally & Steve O’Neill
We’ll discuss what Cajun and Creole music is, and then play some Cajun and Creole tunes.   After learning a simple melody, learn how to accompany it with a rhythmic fiddle backup.  We’ll also look at the guitar accompaniment.  Try out a Cajun triangle to fill out a tune with traditional percussion.  All levels of players are welcome, as well as enthusiasts and spectators.   This is your chance to make this good-time music  part of your life!

Clawhammer Banjo with Alan Sillars
This workshop will provide tools and ideas for intermediate clawhammer banjo players to refine technique, embellish tunes, and add versatility.  We’ll cover practice exercises for right and left hand, share some favorite licks and rhythmic variations, and explore how to integrate these techniques into different fiddle tunes. The workshop is for people who know some songs and have the basics of clawhammer technique down (the “bump-ditty” rhythm; use of hammer-on, pull-offs, and slides; some drop-thumb), along with more advanced players who like to swap ideas

1 pm

Harmony Singing with Sally Jablonsky & Daniel Nickerson
Play with different ways of warming up and strengthening the voice before learning an a cappella song. Also, learn tools to find a harmony part to any song! Welcome to singers of all levels.

Fiddling for Kids with Geoff Taylor
This workshop is just for kids and all about having a good time with some old time tunes. Bring your fiddle and we will saw away!

Beginning Clawhammer Banjo
We will start at the beginning and work on a bum-ditty and some chords, and get to a song by the end. Get that banjo out of the closet and join us.

2 pm

Old Time Slow Jam with The Beet Tops
Playing tunes at dance tempo is a good ol’ time, but slowing it down is fun, too. This ‘workshop’ will be an opportunity to play some of those Old Time favorites SLOWLY. No teaching involved here – come ready to play. Jam hosted by members of The Beet Tops.

Intermediate Old Time Fiddle and Guitar with Sally Jablonsky and Milo Krims
Bowing Fun, Crooked Fiddle Tune, Plus Guitar Part! Learn a crooked fiddle tune in Calico tuning (AEAC#), complete with bowings. Sally will also show how to swap different rhythmic bowing patterns around within the tune. Milo will teach the guitar chords and some bass runs. Bring a recording device.

3 pm

Clogging with Bev Young
If you can tap your foot, you can clog!  Come learn the basics and let your feet fly.

Yodeling with Aaron Jennings

Three-Finger Banjo – Fiddle Tunes with three fingers with Daniel Nickerson
Explore melodic and rhythmic approaches to playing fiddle tunes on three-finger style banjo. Will include a discussion of different accompaniment techniques as well as a phrase by phrase breakdown of an old-time tune. Finger picks recommended, one hour.

4 pm

Open Caller Square Dance with Deux Boeuf and Chelle Karcher
Calling all callers! Calling all dancers! This square dance is an opportunity for new and beginning callers to practice calling in a friendly atmosphere. Bring a new dance to try out on a friendly crowd. Or just show up with your dancing shoes on.

Fiddle and Guitar for all levels – with Sally Jablonsky and Milo Krims
Learn a cross A (AEAE) fiddle tune with bowings. Sally will break down bowing patterns into lil bits. Milo will teach the guitar part, and some bass runs. Bring a recording device.
